This concept for a park and memorial to those that died on Flight MH17 was developed before the competition site was relocated to an artificial island and therefore was not submitted. The full board can be downloaded as a pdf here. The design was guided by three aims; firstly, to create a fitting memorial; secondly, to provide a space that incorporates recreational facilities for the surrounding population and, thirdly, to deal with the waste material, from the buildings on the site that were to be demolished, in a financially and environmentally sustainable way. The primary avenue on the site runs from the visitor centre up a large mound (built from waste rubble capped in soil). On the anniversary of the incident, the sun sets at the end of this avenue marking the start of a procession that takes friends and family of the victims on a circular route to the Memorial Meadow, with its light sculpture, and then back to the visitor centre.
