FRLA was invited to participate in a competition to design a secular cemetery for a small community. Modern cemeteries are often utilitarian in their design and uninspiring in their use of space. We felt that this doesn’t need to be so and wanted to create a landscape that would say something about the experience of life and death as well as document the inhabitants of the community who have passed away. Our entry draws on the traditional use of mounds in pre-Christian burials. Through a combination of sequential burial along a spiral path and periodic planting of trees, a landscape is created that is constant but will change with time, providing a sense of place within time.
